St. Andrew The Apostle School at 418 Mt. Prospect Ave. , Clifton, NJ 07012-1406 US - What Makes Us Unique?

What Makes Us Unique?

Middle States Accredited
The Presentation Sisters came to St. Andrew's in 1953 at the invitation of the pastor at the time, Rev. Carmel J. Scanlon and have been a part of our school's history for the last five decades The Sisters have a long history of educational endeavors dating from their establishment in Ireland in 1775. The foundress, Nano Nagle, began instructing poor children in the City of Cork who were denied a Catholic education due to the laws imposed by England at the time. More women joined her and the small schools spread through Ireland. In 1874 a request came from the United States and twelve Presentation Sisters sailed for New York to teach immigrant children at St. Michael's parish in Manhattan. Requests came from other parishes and the Sisters eventually staffed several schools along the east coast as well as other places in the United States. teaching three R's always included instruction in the faith. Reaching out to families was a hallmark of the foundress who spent her evenings visiting and attending to the ill and elderly. The same belief in the importance of a Catholic education edures to this day with the conviction that a good education is the best route to the future and the basis of good moral character. Today, Sr. Margaret Murphy is the seventh Presentation Sister to be principal of St. Andrew's School, bringing the history and tradition of her Congregation to the twenty first century. A dedicated staff of lay people, working in this tradition, carries on the reputation of our school as one of high quality, focused on giving students a strong foundation in the faith as well as in their academic life. We have a great tradition that makes us who we are, and that's what makes us unique.
